08/19/2024 Fatal crash

So, yesterday, when working on my site I noticed that my webpanels were down. I turned on the monitor thats connected to my server and btop was completely frozen. Oh well, whatever, I thought, I'll just force reboot. I force shutdown the physical server, since it was completely unresponsive. However, upon trying to boot it up, I got an Initramfs error... which was confusing. Looking it up I couldn't find anything about it pertaining to abrupt shutdowns.

Anyway, I said fuck it, and went out biking since I really didn't feel like dealing with it. When I came back home, I tried to boot it again, and this time it didn't give me any errors, but it was stuck with a blinking cursor forever. Well that sucked, and i figured I'd just leave it down overnight and just reinstall Proxmox in the morning. Lo and behold, now that it is finally morning, I try to boot it up again just to see if it'll give me any errors, and look away. And when I look back I see the login prompt. WHAT... I check my webpanels and the site and everything is back up. Whatever, i guess... I'm glad I don't have to do any extra work fwiw

I'd like to figure out what exactly caused that issue though, maybe btop caused an overflow from running for this long? Although I doubt it, I didn't see any of the resources go up in the monitor so likely what happened is something touched a bad sector on one of those really fucking old RAM sticks and hung up the system. My server is currently a very old Optiplex, as the CPUs haven't arrived for the new servver yet. They should be here in September though.

I got myself a cabinet from the thrift store yesterday, so I'm hoping to organize the room some more and get rid of extra unneeded junk. I also ordered a new PSU for my latest build and I kinda overpaid, but its whatever, 10 bucks is not gonna bankrupt me. Ill just swap the PSU I got (some Gold rated Chieftec) into one of the machines I am keeping before selling. Maybe into my other Optiplex. Honestly, I'd keep the newest build. Its got M.2, decent CPU and RAM support, and runs quiet and nice, but the issue is that finding a TOTL CPU for it will be very hard, not to mention the 1151 platform fuckin EATS power. I'm probably just gonna sell it off along with one of my Optiplexes and use the money I saved to build a Ryzen or Ryzen-adjacent server. I wanted to build a separate server just to run some games.

Though, I think the newest server might be great for running some servers too, I'll have to check what the CPU cores and RAM are like. I'm also looking into upgrading some of the drives its running, it'd be nice to bring it into the modern day and age and swap some of those HDDs for SSDs especially considering that SSD costs now aren't all that crazy high. Maybe thats what I should spend hte potential upgrade money on. Either way, no reason to wonder about it right. I still have a lot of IRL stuff to figure out first, and I'll need to save whatever little focusing power I have left to get those done.

Deuces.
